Saturday Tastings you don’t want to miss, at Bourbon & Canal

July 29, 2010

Three Cheers for Summer!  Hope you’re having a great one!

We have a really cool tasting line-up for this Saturday, so we had to write and tell you about it. New, rare and really good drinks will be served up for you to taste Saturday from 12 noon to 10pm. And it’s free, as always! Stop in to try:

Maker’s 46

A new super-premium Bourbon from the folks at Maker’s Mark. It takes a long time to make a new bourbon – all those years of barrel-aging and such, so this is big news. To make 46, they take regular Makers barrels, pop them open and add some specially treated barrel staves, then close it back up and age it some more. The result is a sweeter, caramel taste that is oh so smooth. They are just ramping up production, so there is only a small allocation available right now. But it’s a unique taste that is worth the money.

Pennywise Wines

A new brand we’ve added – in Cabernet and Merlot – that is a great value for its price of $12.99. It’s produced by a small company in California called “The Other Guys” who don’t actually grow any grapes. Instead, they scour the wholesale market and buy great crops for the best price possible. This lets them produce better wine at a lower price, which is why they call this one “Pennywise”.

Red Stripe Light

“Hooray, Beer!”  Or rather, “Hooray, Light Beer!”  The laid-back islanders in Jamaica have gotten on board the lower calorie train and it’s stopping by here. Can’t afford a summer vacation to Jamaica? Don’t worry, be happy, with some Jamaican beer. Most people think this tastes a lot like regular Red Stripe, except now it’s light. Try it and see what you think. At only $7.99, you can’t go wrong.

Hope to see you Saturday!

May 13, 2010

Greetings & Happy Spring!

Here’s a quick update on what’s going on at Bourbon & Canal…

Beer Sale Continues:

We have been running 18pk cans of Bud/Miller/Coors at 9.99 (reg $14.99) since…well, for so long we’ve lost track! However, this weekend will be the last weekend for this historically low price. Starting Monday, they’ll be 10.99. Which by the way is still as low or lower than anyone else in the area – plus you never pay extra to get it cold at Bourbon & Canal. But, we wanted to let our subscribers and fans know that if you want to save that extra 1.00, get in here this weekend and stock up with enough to get you through Memorial Day.

25 Great Wines for Spring, 25% Off – Sale Continues:

Many of you have taken advantage of this “while they last” promotion and discovered some great new white wines. For those that haven’t, there are still a few varieties left. Stop in and score a great value soon – just ask one of our team members to show you what’s available.

Saturday Sampling:

For our weekly free tastings (noon to 10pm), Saturday we’ll be pouring a new wine, Red Tree Pinot Noir. It’s not the best Pinot Noir you’ve ever had, but it’s pretty darn good for only $8.99.

Also, Saturday you can taste two beers from the new Sun King Brewery in Indianapolis. (more below)

Sun King Brewing enters Terre Haute market:

Sun King is a new brewery in Indianapolis – the first full-scale brewery built in modern times. They are making a wide range of craft and seasonal beers in small, artisanal batches. We have tried several of them, and we have to say they are quite good. Since they started about a year ago, they have only sold their beers to restaurants primarily in Indy, but they have just started canning their two best-sellers: Osiris Pale Ale and Sunlight Cream Ale. We are proud to be the first and only store in Terre Haute and the surrounding area where you can find these. Be sure to stop by Saturday to taste them for yourself.

New Arrivals:

New products since we last wrote you:

  • Crown Royal Black is back in stock
  • Blackheart Spiced Rum – the highest proof of all the original spiced rums
  • Bacardi Torch Cherry – try this with Coke
  • Hounddog tea flavored vodkas from Everclear, in 4 fruit flavors
  • Lindeman’s Moscato wine – sweet and popular and a bargain
  • Jack Daniels limited edition “American Forest” whiskey
  • Firefly Bourbon sweet tea
  • Seagram’s Lime Melonade wine coolers
  • Cuervo Margarita Balls – you just have to see these, very interesting

We hope to see you this weekend!

Share this with a friend and bring them along for the free tasting also…

Flying Pig Alert! plus Saturday Tasting menu, new arrivals….

April 22, 2010

With the nicer weather and the start of gardening, yard care, baseball season, and everything else, it seems like everyone is super-busy lately. But we’re glad…those are all great reasons to enjoy a nice drink, too.  Here’s a quick note to let you know what’s going on at Bourbon & Canal:

Herding Cats Merlot-Pinotage, 3.0L box, regularly a bargain even at 19.99, but now an unbeatable deal at just 9.99!  Keep in mind that 3 liters is the equivalent of 4 regular-sized 750ml bottles of wine, so this is essentially getting a $10 quality wine for only 2.50. It will be on our free Saturday Tasting menu so you can see for yourself that this is a nice wine, just at a ridiculously cheap price!

Also on Sampling Saturday (always free, from noon to 10pm) will be one of our favorite summer beers, Leinenkugel Summer Shandy. This is a great, flavorful summer beer that’s brewed with some lemon in it, so it’s super refreshing. Stop in Saturday to get your first taste of Summer.

New Arrivals:  There are lots of Early Summer beers starting to come in, including:

  • Leinenkugel Summer Shandy
  • Shiner Hefeweissen
  • Schneider Weiss (from Germany)
  • Leinenkugel Summer Sampler 12pk
  • Left Hand Mountain Mixer (summer sampler) 12pk

Also just in, Newcastle 5.0L “fridge kegs”, only 19.99. These also fit into the Heineken Beertender, so now it’s great to be able to use your Beertender and have more variety.

And, Miller Genuine Draft 20-pack bottles are on a special sale for only 12.00, while supplies last.

That’s all for now. Be sure to stop in Saturday for the free tasting, and bring also some friends. And, forward this along so they can sign up for emails and Facebook alerts themselves.

Beer Sale! Plus: Hoops, Easter, Baseball, Tastings, New Arrivals & More

April 1, 2010

Friends, there’s a lot to talk about this week. So buckle up and read on…

1.  Hoops!

Basketball calls for beer, right? To celebrate the Final Four being played in Indianapolis, and especially the success of our ‘hometown favorite’ Bulldogs, we’re having the best beer sale of the year this weekend:

18 pack cans of Bud, Miller and Coors products are only 9.99 (reg. 14.99). Beer will never be this cheap again. (seriously!) And of course as always, at Bourbon & Canal you never pay extra to get it cold. So get on over to the store between now and Saturday and stock up.

2.  Easter. And Passover.

Easter is a great family holiday, and traditionally Easter dinner includes either turkey, ham or pork roast. So we suggest you pick up a couple of bottles of Pinot Noir, which will pair very nicely with any of the above. In fact, on this weekend’s tasting we’re featuring a new Pinot Noir we just found recently and liked, Smoking Loon Pinot Noir, at only 9.99 a bottle. And for beer lovers, Three Floyds has released their annual Rabbid Rabbit in celebration of Easter, in stock now.

For Passover, many families share the traditional Kosher wines made by either Manischewitz or Mogen David. We have all the varieties of both brands. But we hear from some shoppers that while those are traditional favorites, some people find them too sweet. So we can also offer you a very nice dry Cabernet Sauvignon: Recanati Cabernet is grown and made in Israel, and is Kosher certified. It’s good Cabernet by any standard, and reasonably priced at 14.99.

3.  Baseball!

Sunday is opening day, which is enough to convince us that Spring is here to stay. To kick off the season right, we have the limited edition Old Style Cubs bottles. And we’ve put them on sale this weekend at only 9.99 for a 24-pack case while supplies last. It doesn’t get any better than that!

4.  Saturday Tastings

Our every-Saturday free tasting lineup looks great for this weekend:

  • Crown Royal Black – just released this week, this is a new variety of Crown Royal that has been aged longer in dark charred barrels, and bottled at 90 proof. Early reports are good. Come try it for yourself and see.
  • Smoking Loon Pinot Noir – perfect for Easter dinner.
  • Oberon – also just released this week is Bell’s Brewery’s Spring/Summer seasonal called Oberon. It has a hint of orange to the taste, and is light and crisp for summer sipping. One of our summer favorites. Taste it with us Saturday and pick up a 6 or 12 pack to celebrate Spring.

5.  New Arrivals

Lots of great new things came in this week:

  • Hop Hound beer
  • Wyder’s Apple Cider
  • Wyder’s Pear cider
  • 1800 Ultimate Margarita, pre-mixed and ready-to-serve
  • 1800 Ultimate Pomegranate Margarita
  • Bunratty Potcheen – an Irish moonshine. Interesting.
  • Three Floyds Rabbid Rabbit – a seasonal beer released for Easter each year
  • Smoking Loon Pinot Noir – on tasting this weekend
  • Crown Royal Black – on tasting this weekend

That’s all the news for this week. There are plenty of reasons to get all your friends together, so enjoy the weather and the festivities. Stop and see us this weekend to stock up on the beer sale and all your weekend drinking requirements.

Forward this on to your friends, too.

25 Great Wines for Spring; Saturday tasting lineup

March 25, 2010

Spring Has Sprung!  We hope you are enjoying the weather as much as we are…

In honor of Spring, we have kicked off our wine sale. 25 Great Wines for Spring, 25% off (while they last). We have chosen 25 white wines we think are great for Spring drinking, and the selection includes a wide variety of styles, varietals and regions. There are a couple of nice Italian Pinot Grigios; some California Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; Riesling and Pinot Blanc from Oregon and Washington, and more. Look for the green signs throughout the wine section with this Spring-y picture. Discounts will ring up automatically at the checkout. Don’t wait too long though – once they’re gone we’ll be bringing in the new vintage at the regular price. This is a great chance to try something new and get a bargain.

This weekend’s tastings (free as always, from noon to 10pm Saturday) include:

  • Chateau Bonnet wine: these are French Bordeaux wines – we have the red, which is a Cabernet/Merlot based blend, and the white, which is Sauvignon Blanc. It’s not easy to find really nice French wines at a reasonable price but these are great for their price at only 10.99.
  • Our beer is Bud Light Golden Wheat. If you haven’t tried it yet, you should. Some people love it, some people hate it. But you won’t know until you try it.

Other notes:

  • Stone Old Guardian is in stock, in limited quantities. If you’re a Stone fan call and reserve yours or stop in and get it before they’re gone.
  • Also, we have a couple of bottles of the Kentucky Breakfast Stout left for public sale, first-come first-served.

There are remnants of Winter seasonal beers left, and there are several wines that we need you to drink so that we have room for the new vintages starting to arrive. Watch your email and our Facebook page for more details soon.

Several new products are being featured in our weekly free tasting this Saturday (noon-10pm). Stop by to enjoy a sip or two of:

  • Biltmore Estates Cardinal Crest wine – a soft, sweet red that fans of Midwestern regional wines will enjoy.

  • Smirnoff Ice’s new flavors: Lemonade, Blueberry-Lemonade, and Cranberry-Lime.

Also look around for several New Arrivals:

  • Old Crow bourbon
  • Cooper’s Extra Stout beer
  • Buffalo Bill’s Orange Cream Blossom beer
  • Stone Old Guardian (just released)

And, for those who’ve been waiting patiently, the Founder’s Kentucky Breakfast Stout will be available starting Friday. This beer is in such high demand and so little was produced, that we will be selling it only by the bottle, not in six-packs. First priority goes to those already on the waiting list, and there will be a few bottles left over to sell to the public, first-come-first-served starting at noon Friday. Limit one bottle per customer.

Hope you are enjoying the weather!  Stop by to see us this weekend, and pass this along to your friends.
